The true cost of CFL

Did you know? If a fluorescent or compact fluorescent (CFL) bulb is broken on your premises, mercury vapour will be released. In the current litigious climate, is there a chance that an employee might sue your company under Health and Safety regulations, or that you might have to close temporarily whilst the area is thoroughly cleaned?

Did you know? It is your responsibility to have your fluorescent and CFL bulbs disposed of by a 'hazardous waste recycling company', at your cost, because of the mercury they contain.

Find out more about the potential dangers of CFLs:

All of this is perhaps iconsequential when compared to the savings that can be made by switching to more energy efficient light sources - both in terms of operating costs and the reduction in emmissions.

However, high-performance LED lighting such as the LIET engine can provide far greater savings on both fronts - with none of the risks that accompany CFLs.

DEFRA advice on the disposal of domestic CFLs

Broken CFLs

  • A vacuum cleaner should not be used to clear up the debris, and care should be taken not to inhale the dust.
  • Rubber gloves should be used, and the broken bulb put into a sealed plastic bag, which should be taken to the local council for disposal.
  • Wipe the area with a damp cloth.
  • Use sticky tape (eg duct tape) to pick up small residual pieces or powder from soft furnishings.
  • Place items used to clean up in a plastic bag and seal it.
  • Place both in another plastic bag and seal that one as well.

Unbroken CFLs

  • Unbroken used bulbs can be taken back to the retailer if they are member of the Distributor Takeback Team.
  • Many local waste disposal sites now have the facilities to safely collect and dispose of old bulbs.

Disposal

  • Contact your local authority for advice on the disposal of broken or intact CFLs as they should be treated as hazardous waste and should not be disposed of in the bin.
